Türkiye's Hirfanlı hydroelectric plant being modernised with domestic technology
Türkiye's Hirfanlı Dam and hydroelectric plant, one of the country's key energy infrastructure assets, is being upgraded under a rehabilitation programme led by state generator EÜAŞ. The works are expected to lift output efficiency and extend service life.

Türkiye's Hirfanlı Dam and Hydroelectric Plant in Kırşehir, one of the country's key energy infrastructure facilities, is being upgraded under a rehabilitation programme led by state generator EÜAŞ. According to TRT Haber Ekonomi, the project draws heavily on domestic equipment suppliers for turbine and generator modernisation. The plant has held a strategic share in Türkiye's installed capacity since it was commissioned in 1959.
EÜAŞ management said efficiency is expected to improve by 8 to 12 percent after the upgrade and the facility's service life is to be extended by 25 years. The Energy and Natural Resources Ministry's 2026 energy report has flagged the modernisation of older hydroelectric facilities with domestic technology as a priority investment line. Industry representatives say the use of domestic equipment will reduce exposure to foreign-exchange risk.
The project is being partly financed by the European Investment Bank and the Türkiye Development and Investment Bank. The hydroelectric segment, which makes up 27 percent of Türkiye's renewable installed capacity, is seen as a medium-term support for generation security. This article is not investment advice.
