The alert covers the Sacatepéquez, Chimaltenango and Escuintla departments, located near the capital. Around 1.6 million people live across these three areas, and authorities have warned that ash clouds and lava flows could reach populated zones.
Hundreds of residents have been forced to flee their homes as a precaution. The volcano, though popular with hikers, is known for frequent eruptions, and officials say they are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
