The shaking was felt widely across the island region, and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued an aftershock warning.
Regional authorities have so far reported one fatality and structural damage at several settlements. Port and airport authorities said operations had been significantly restricted. Hospital generators switched to backup, and communications lines experienced temporary outages.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued tsunami alerts across the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan and Micronesia. Earthquake and disaster-response teams from the United States, Japan and Australia have offered support, and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) has activated regional coordination mechanisms.
