Can drinking orange juice every day really change your genes

A fixture of breakfast tables for generations, orange juice has long been known mainly as a source of vitamin C. But new research suggests this everyday drink may have a far deeper effect on the body than scientists previously appreciated.
Researchers found that regularly drinking orange juice appears to change the activity of genes tied to inflammation, blood pressure regulation, metabolism and blood sugar control. The scope of the shift is broad, involving the activity of thousands of genes.
This kind of effect falls under a relatively young field known as nutrigenomics, which studies how diet influences gene expression. While the underlying DNA sequence stays fixed, which genes get switched on or off, and to what degree, can be shaped by environmental factors including what we eat.
Scientists suspect a compound in orange juice called hesperidin is one likely culprit behind the effect. Hesperidin is a flavonoid concentrated in citrus peel and the white pith beneath it, and laboratory studies have shown it has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Earlier research had already linked orange juice consumption to improved cholesterol profiles and positive changes in blood vessel health. The new findings appear to point toward a possible molecular mechanism underlying those earlier clinical observations.
The gut microbiome may also play a role in the equation. Fibre and plant compounds in orange juice can alter the composition of bacterial communities living in the gut, and those bacteria can in turn indirectly influence gene expression throughout the body via their own metabolic byproducts.
Specialists caution against overstating the findings, however. Observing changes in gene expression doesn't automatically mean those changes are 'good' or 'bad' for health — each shift needs to be examined individually for its clinical consequences.
Orange juice's sugar content is also a factor worth keeping in mind. Even fresh-squeezed or 100% fruit juice contains natural sugars, and excessive consumption can contribute to blood sugar swings, particularly in people with existing sensitivity. Specialists recommend moderate intake rather than unlimited consumption.
Researchers say longer studies are needed to understand how long these genetic effects persist, and whether they reverse once someone stops drinking orange juice regularly. The findings so far are largely based on short- to medium-term consumption periods.
Still, scientists say the results support a broader picture of how nutrition interacts with our genes: what we eat and drink can shape how our cells function, not by altering our DNA sequence itself, but by influencing how that sequence gets read.
