Pistons surge in the second half to top Cavaliers and force a Game 7

The Detroit Pistons beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 122-104 in Game 6 of the 2026 NBA Eastern Conference semi-finals on Friday night, levelling the series at 3-3 and forcing a decisive Game 7. Cleveland's primary scorers, Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland, struggled to break clear of Detroit's perimeter pressure, and Detroit survived elimination for the fourth time this post-season.
Cade Cunningham was the deciding figure on the night. The Pistons guard finished with 31 points and 14 assists, carrying the offence in the second half and helping his team-mates find cleaner three-point looks. Detroit shot 7 of 12 from three in the third quarter alone.
For much of the first half Cleveland had set the pace. Mitchell scored 19 in the first two quarters and the Cavaliers led by two at half-time. The third quarter changed the match; with Cunningham, Jaden Ivey and Tobias Harris running coordinated actions, Cleveland was outscored 14-2 over four minutes.
In the fourth quarter Detroit held its lead. Pistons head coach J.B. Bickerstaff said: 'All season we've been trying to find out how this group responds. The answer is always the same: they believe in the play, they believe in each other.' Detroit has won four elimination games in this post-season.
For Cleveland, Mitchell finished with 34 points but his fourth-quarter shooting dropped below 30%. Cleveland head coach Kenny Atkinson said: 'The character we walk into Game 7 with is what matters; we know that very clearly.' Atkinson said the team would conduct additional analysis on Cleveland's recent Game 6 performances.
The deciding game will be played on Sunday evening in Cleveland at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. The winner advances to face the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals. The Knicks had already secured their place by defeating the Indiana Pacers 4-2 in their own semi-final.
The Pistons's fourth elimination win in this series has been read as concrete evidence of the rebuild that has reshaped the franchise over three seasons. NBA analysts pointed out that a team near the bottom of the standings in 2024 has now become one of the East's strongest four, built around Cunningham. Detroit finished the regular season third in the conference with 56 wins.
Kenny Atkinson is also managing uncertainty heading into Game 7. Garland's knee issue has limited his minutes in the series and concentrated the offensive load on Mitchell. Atkinson said the team would assess Garland's availability after Saturday's practice.
In Eastern Conference history this Pistons-Cavaliers series is shaping up as one of the longest and most volatile semi-finals of the past decade. ESPN's data team noted that across the six games of the series both sides have won at least once after trailing by ten or more — a comparatively rare pattern in NBA play-off history.
Ticket demand for Sunday's game has been reported at record levels. Cleveland's local media has framed the Game 7 of this semi-final, in which the home side led the series early without putting it away, as 'the most important 48 minutes of Cavaliers play-off basketball in a decade.'
