Dozens of Nigerian Fishermen Missing After Chad Air Strikes on Boko Haram
About 40 Nigerian fishermen are feared dead around Lake Chad after Chadian air strikes targeted Boko Haram positions, fishermen's leaders told the BBC. Some are believed to have drowned while trying to flee the strikes.

About 40 Nigerian fishermen are missing after Chadian air strikes targeting Boko Haram positions along Lake Chad. A fishermen's leader told the BBC that the missing are made up of those wounded in the strikes and others who drowned while trying to flee.
Chadian authorities said the operations targeted the armed group and that care was taken to avoid civilian areas. However, Boko Haram fighters frequently operate in close proximity to villages and fishing camps around the lake, which increases the risk of civilian casualties.
The Nigerian government said it has sent a delegation to investigate the incident. The United Nations called for humanitarian access to be protected. Fishing remains the main livelihood for hundreds of thousands of people across the Lake Chad basin.
