South Africa to Launch Presidential Impeachment Probe Over 'Farmgate' Scandal
South Africa's parliament said it will launch a constitutional impeachment process over the 'Farmgate' scandal involving the president. The speaker will move to set up an investigative committee, lawmakers said.

South Africa's National Assembly said it will start a constitutional impeachment inquiry into the president over the so-called 'Farmgate' scandal. Speaker Thoko Didiza will initiate the formal steps to set up an investigative committee, lawmakers told the chamber.
The Farmgate affair centres on a large amount of foreign currency allegedly stolen from the president's Phala Phala farm in 2020 and not properly reported. The Constitutional Court ruled last week that parliament has the authority to examine the matter. Debate inside the governing ANC over how to proceed is ongoing.
Opposition parties told Al Jazeera they want the inquiry to conclude quickly. Investors saw limited rand volatility after the announcement, while the Johannesburg Stock Exchange closed the session slightly lower. The government has not yet issued an official response to the parliament's decision.
