A Brazilian court sentenced Admiral Almir Garnier, the country's former navy chief, to 24 years in prison for his role in the January 8 coup plot, court records confirmed this week. Garnier remains the only one of Brazil's three armed-forces commanders to be convicted over the attempt to overturn the 2022 election result.
Prosecutors argued Garnier used his position atop the navy to support efforts to keep the outgoing president in power, including alleged discussions of military intervention in the weeks following the vote. The army and air force chiefs at the time were not charged.
Garnier is appealing the conviction and sentence in 2026, according to his legal team. The case remains one of the most closely watched in Brazil's continuing reckoning with the January 8 riots, which saw supporters of the former president storm government buildings in the capital.
