Dozens of Dogs Rescued and Suspect Arrested in Uganda After BBC Investigation
Ugandan authorities rescued dozens of dogs from a facility and arrested a suspect after BBC reporting exposed a fraud network using animals to elicit online donations. Officials said the dogs are receiving emergency veterinary care. Investigations are expected to widen to other cities.

Ugandan authorities rescued dozens of dogs from a facility during an operation following the BBC News Africa investigation into an online donation fraud network. The investigation showed the network used social media videos of seemingly injured dogs to solicit money from animal lovers worldwide. One suspect has been detained, with more arrests expected.
Kampala police said the animals were moved to a central clinic for emergency veterinary care, with several showing signs of malnutrition and dehydration. The Uganda Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (USPCA) provided logistical support during the rescue operation.
International donation platforms have begun suspending suspect profiles in the wake of BBC reporting. However, the head of USPCA said evidence suggests the network used similar methods in other East African countries. Expanding the investigation to Tanzania and Kenya is now on the agenda.
