Japan raids ice-cream giants over alleged price-fixing as record summer heat continues
Japan's Fair Trade Commission has carried out raids at major ice-cream makers over alleged price-fixing as the country battles record summer temperatures. The probe lands amid rising public concern over consumer prices during the heatwave.

Japan's Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) carried out simultaneous raids on Tuesday at major ice-cream manufacturers. According to BBC Asia, the investigation centres on claims that the companies coordinated retail-price increases. The firms said in formal statements that they would cooperate fully with the JFTC.
The raids took place as Japan endured a heatwave that pushed temperatures close to 40°C in cities including Tokyo. Complaints about summer-season price rises in consumer goods have grown markedly in Japan this year, and the business press has flagged soft drinks and ice cream as categories under particular pricing pressure.
The JFTC said the probe could take several weeks. Consumer groups and retailers noted that any confirmed breach could result in consumer rebates or market-share-based fines. Industry analysts believe the case could open the door to additional probes in related categories.
