Trump Pauses Hormuz Plan 50 Hours After Announcing It - What Happened?
Donald Trump's "Project Freedom" operation, announced to secure shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, was put on hold just 50 hours after it was unveiled. BBC sources cite Chinese pressure, Saudi-led diplomacy and divisions inside the Pentagon as the drivers behind this rapid climbdown.

Donald Trump used a televised broadcast last weekend to announce "Project Freedom", an operation that would have used US Navy escorts to secure shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. According to BBC sources, only 50 hours later the White House paused the operation and cited a need for "further review."
Three main developments triggered the climbdown. First, Beijing told Trump in a phone call that the plan would directly threaten Chinese energy supplies and proposed an alternative passage protocol routed through Saudi Arabia. Second, Saudi officials warned that hosting US Navy escort assets through Hormuz could raise the risk of clashes with Tehran on Saudi infrastructure.
The third and most critical factor was a split inside the Pentagon. The US Joint Chiefs of Staff said the operation would require at least two carrier strike groups under current force levels. Trump has now shelved the escort plan in favour of negotiations being run through a Saudi-Chinese channel. Pentagon sources say the plan may return in modified form within weeks.
