Why a Covid-19 infection can wake up dormant viruses already in your body

Our bodies carry more 'dormant' viruses than most people realize. Most people encounter common viruses in childhood — Epstein-Barr virus or the varicella-zoster virus that causes chickenpox, for example — and rather than eliminating them entirely, the immune system quietly suppresses them, often in nerve cells or immune cells. Those viruses can then sit dormant for years, even decades, without causing any symptoms.
According to STAT News, a new study finds that a Covid-19 infection can disrupt that balance and 're-wake' dormant viruses. Researchers found evidence that in patients with acute Covid-19 infections, previously silent viruses became reactivated.
The phenomenon itself isn't new to medicine; scientists have long known that stress, other infections, or immune suppression can trigger dormant viruses. The chickenpox virus, for instance, can resurface years later as shingles. This study suggests Covid-19 may play a similar triggering role.
The leading theory for how this happens involves Covid-19 temporarily weakening or reshuffling the immune system. As the virus occupies part of the body's immune resources, the mechanisms that normally keep other viruses suppressed can also weaken temporarily — giving dormant viruses an opening to replicate again.
One significant implication of the finding relates to long Covid, the condition in which some patients experience fatigue, brain fog, and other symptoms for months after their initial infection. Researchers believe some of those lingering symptoms may stem not directly from Covid-19 itself, but from the secondary reactivations it triggers.
According to STAT News, scientists are now working to determine which viruses reactivate most often and which groups of patients are most affected. People with already weakened immune systems, or those under chronic stress, are thought to be more susceptible to these kinds of reactivations.
The research area also carries a practical implication for clinicians: when unexplained symptoms appear in long Covid patients, doctors may need to look beyond the direct effects of Covid-19 itself and consider possible viral reactivations. That broadens the range of potential treatment approaches.
Experts stress that the findings are exciting but still early. Larger, longer-term studies are needed to firmly establish the direct causal link between reactivation and specific symptoms.
In the meantime, the research is a fresh reminder that Covid-19's effects on the body aren't limited to the acute illness — it can disturb the immune system's delicate balance in ways that play out over the long term.
Scientists say the findings are part of a broader effort to understand the biological mechanisms underlying long Covid, and that future studies may focus on developing new approaches to prevent or treat these reactivations.
