Other variants include alternate-day fasting and the 5:2 approach, which restricts calorie intake on two non-consecutive days each week. This new study focused specifically on how time-restricted eating in older adults relates to cognitive function, rather than on weight loss, which has been the primary focus of most fasting research to date.
The study enrolled older women living with overweight or obesity. Some participants confined their meals to a nine-hour window and stopped eating at least four hours before bedtime, while a comparison group spread their meals over a longer period without such restrictions. Researchers then compared cognitive test results between the two groups after the intervention period, alongside measures such as body weight and metabolic markers.
The "problem-solving tests" participants completed typically assess higher-order mental skills such as planning, reasoning and adapting to new situations, abilities that are among the cognitive domains most vulnerable to decline with age and that are often affected in the early stages of dementia, well before memory loss becomes noticeable. Researchers consider such tests particularly meaningful because these skills are closely linked to the ability to make complex decisions and live independently in daily life.
Researchers did not draw firm conclusions about the exact mechanism behind the observed difference, but noted that time-restricted eating may improve insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation and bring eating patterns into closer alignment with the body's natural circadian rhythm, all factors that could theoretically support brain health. Some scientists have also theorised that longer overnight fasting periods could support the brain's own overnight clearance processes, though this study did not directly test that mechanism. These kinds of physiological hypotheses currently rest on indirect evidence from animal work and small human studies, meaning they remain assumptions still awaiting confirmation even when considered alongside this study's findings.
The research team was careful to stress that the findings are preliminary rather than definitive. The study was a small-scale pilot, and its results do not prove that intermittent fasting prevents or reverses dementia risk; they point to an association that warrants further investigation with larger and more rigorously controlled trials before any firm conclusions can be drawn.
Previous research has already examined the effects of time-restricted eating on weight management and blood sugar control, generally finding modest benefits for both; this new study adds a hint that those already-known metabolic effects might also connect to cognitive health in later life.
The broader body of research on delaying cognitive decline points to the importance of lifestyle factors such as regular physical activity, quality sleep and balanced nutrition; this new finding suggests meal timing could be another factor worth adding to that picture, rather than a replacement for those established habits.
The researchers explicitly note that the sample was limited to older women living with overweight or obesity, and that the results cannot be generalised to other age groups, sexes or body types, including older men or people at a healthy weight. Larger studies with more diverse participant groups are needed to determine whether the same pattern holds more broadly.
Experts recommend that older adults in particular consult a doctor before making major changes to their eating patterns, since restricting meal times may not be appropriate for everyone, including people taking certain medications, those with diabetes, or people with a history of disordered eating. This pilot study is being viewed as a starting point for larger research into the relationship between intermittent fasting and cognitive health, rather than as a basis for new dietary guidelines. Researchers say the next step should be longer-term studies that include men, a wider age range and a broader range of body types, though trials of that scale typically take years to complete and publish.
