The crux of the problem is this: for the majority of people who hear it, no external source has ever been detected. Acoustic engineers have repeatedly scanned locations with microphones, seismographs and specialised frequency-measuring equipment, but no measurable external vibration corresponding to the sound has been found — until now.
A new study was designed to test two possible explanations. The first was that people who hear The Hum might have unusually sensitive low-frequency hearing; the second was that their ears might actually be producing a real, externally measurable sound of their own — a phenomenon known as otoacoustic emissions.
Researchers tested participants who reported hearing The Hum in a laboratory setting: they precisely measured hearing thresholds and used microphones placed in the ear canal to check whether a sound was genuinely emanating from the ear. The results largely ruled out both theories — most participants showed neither abnormal low-frequency sensitivity nor a measurable ear-generated sound.
The explanation that emerged as the strongest possibility was low-frequency tinnitus. Tinnitus is commonly known as 'ringing in the ears' and is usually experienced as a high-pitched whistle, but researchers say a rarer variant can present as a low-pitched hum or drone — matching exactly what those who hear The Hum describe.
The significance of this finding is considerable, because tinnitus is not external but an internal perception arising from signal processing in the brain's auditory pathways. That would explain why The Hum is heard by some people and not others, why it becomes more noticeable in quiet at night, and why it has never once been captured on a microphone.
The finding carries both reassurance and disappointment for people who have lived with The Hum for years. Reassurance, because they are no longer being dismissed as 'imagining things' or 'overly sensitive' — what they are experiencing is a genuine neurological phenomenon. Disappointment, because since the problem has no external source to remove, there is no simple fix either.
Still, researchers stress that not all cases share the same explanation. In some Hum clusters — for example, communities near a particular industrial site — genuine low-frequency industrial vibration has previously been confirmed as the cause. The new study offers a plausible explanation for the majority of cases with no external source, but it does not claim every Hum report shares the same origin.
The results also contribute to broader tinnitus research. How low-frequency tinnitus is triggered, and why it becomes more pronounced in some people than others, is still not fully understood; studying Hum cases could help map this wider spectrum of tinnitus.
For now, the advice for thousands of people is to consult an ear, nose and throat specialist or an audiologist rather than search for an external source. Because according to this research, the sound they are chasing isn't outside — it's inside their own ear.
