Every fusion energy startup that has raised over $100 million

Long the subject of science-fiction punchlines, fusion energy has become a serious sector for investors over the past five years. Capital flowing into private fusion companies now totals $7.1 billion, with the bulk of that money concentrated in a small number of companies considered furthest along technologically.
Fusion mimics how the sun generates energy: fusing hydrogen isotopes under extreme heat and pressure to release enormous amounts of energy. Unlike the fission process used in existing nuclear power plants, fusion doesn't produce long-lived radioactive waste and carries no meltdown risk, making it an attractive prospect for energy companies.
One of the best-funded companies in the sector uses a magnetic confinement approach and has drawn significant investment from major technology firms. Its stated plan is to bring the first commercial fusion reactor supplying power to the grid online by the early 2030s.
Another leading player is focused on laser-driven 'inertial confinement fusion', an approach aimed at commercializing the technology behind a landmark 2022 experiment at a US national laboratory that achieved net energy gain, producing more energy than was used to trigger the reaction.
A third group of companies is pursuing 'compact tokamak' designs, using high-temperature superconducting magnets to significantly shrink the size of traditional tokamak reactors and lower construction costs. This approach has become one of the fastest-growing investment categories in the sector in recent years.
Behind the surge in investor interest lies the explosive growth in electricity demand from AI data centres. Major technology companies are searching for reliable, low-carbon power sources to feed their massive computing infrastructure, and some are joining that search directly by investing in fusion startups or signing long-term power purchase agreements.
The sector still faces significant technical hurdles, however. No private fusion company has yet demonstrated sustained, commercial-scale positive net energy production. Promising as laboratory experiments have been, turning them into a reliable power plant that runs around the clock is a far harder engineering problem.
Analysts note that the concentration of funding among so few companies cuts both ways. It channels more resources toward the most promising technologies, but it also means the sector's overall trajectory now depends heavily on the success — or failure — of just a handful of firms.
Governments are joining the race too. The US, the UK and the European Union are all expanding regulatory frameworks and funding programmes aimed at both public research labs and private companies, a sign that fusion's momentum isn't reliant on private capital alone.
For now, fusion energy remains what investors describe as a 'high risk, potentially unlimited reward' category. When — or whether — the sector will actually bring its first commercial reactor online remains uncertain, even as the amount of capital flowing into it keeps climbing.
