India LPG sales dropped 13% in April as Hormuz crisis chokes supplies
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) sales in India fell 13% year-on-year in April due to supply bottlenecks caused by tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. According to Ministry of Petroleum data, the decline marks the end of a fourteen-month rising streak. Household cylinder prices rose 19%.

According to data released by India's Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, LPG sales in the country fell 13% year-on-year in April 2026 to 2.3 million tonnes. The decline breaks a 14-month rising streak that began in February 2025; the main driver is disruption to LNG tanker routes caused by tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
38% of India's LPG demand is imported from Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Indian Oil Corporation CFO Anuj Jain told the Economic Times: 'Due to supply disruptions, we have drawn 1.2 million tonnes from our strategic reserves'. Bharat Petroleum reported that 9 of 28 tankers bound for Mumbai port have had to change route.
The price of a 14.2-kilogram household LPG cylinder rose to an average of 1,082 rupees (about $12.90) in April, equivalent to a 19% year-on-year rise. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced that the government will apply a 200-rupee per cylinder subsidy for the lowest 30% income group. Cylinder demand has fallen for the first time since February 2026; analysts assess that the pressure will persist until supply normalises.
