Honduras Mayor Arrested for Masterminding Environmentalist's Killing
Honduran prosecutors arrested a western municipality mayor for allegedly masterminding the 2024 killing of environmental activist Juan Lopez. Authorities said the crime may be linked to local opposition against mining and hydroelectric projects.

The arrested mayor is among the main local backers of a hydroelectric company that Lopez repeatedly protested against. Prosecutors said phone records and bank transfers formed the basis of the arrest. Honduras has been ranked among the deadliest countries in the world for environmental defenders over the past decade.
Lopez's killing triggered large protests in Tocoa, and activist groups have long alleged impunity in such cases. The government announced that ongoing investigations into other environmentalist killings will be reviewed under the same framework. The UN High Commissioner welcomed the development and called for transparent prosecutions.
The case is seen as symbolic for Honduras's centre-left government, which took office in 2024 on a platform of fighting organised crime and corporate networks. Further arrests are expected as the investigation widens. Calls to halt mining and dam projects have also resurfaced.
