Can chewing gum lower HPV levels? What a new study found

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is best known as the leading cause of cervical cancer, but it also drives a growing share of head and neck cancers, particularly oropharyngeal cancers. Researchers have long sought ways to reduce oral HPV viral load, and a new study suggests a simple chewing gum might help.
The study used a specially formulated gum containing specific plant-derived compounds and binding proteins. Researchers hypothesized that these compounds could physically bind to virus particles in the mouth, helping clear them from the body.
In the trial, participants who tested positive for oral HPV chewed the gum at regular intervals over several weeks. Researchers collected saliva samples before and after the study period to measure changes in viral load.
The results showed a marked reduction in viral load among a substantial share of participants, with the decrease reaching as high as 93% in some cases. Researchers note the effect varied among individuals, but the overall trend was consistent.
Scientists say the findings carry particular significance because no approved method currently treats oral HPV infection directly. Existing approaches rely largely on vaccination for prevention and regular screening.
Researchers explain the gum is not expected to replace vaccination, but could instead serve as a complementary tool — reducing viral load in people already infected, potentially lowering transmission risk and the likelihood of eventual cancer development.
One of the study's most notable aspects is the gum's low cost and easy accessibility. Experts say that if efficacy is confirmed in larger trials, the approach could become an important public health tool, particularly in regions where access to healthcare remains limited.
On safety, researchers say the compounds used meet food safety standards and no serious adverse effects were reported during the study. However, the effects of long-term use have not yet been investigated.
Independent experts urge cautious optimism given the small sample size, stressing that larger, randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm the results.
The research team says the next stage will involve a larger, multi-site study with broader participant groups, expected to clarify both the gum's efficacy and whether it reduces the risk of head and neck cancer.
