Why sitting up straight may improve mood and decision-making

A newly published study suggests that sitting posture may influence not just physical comfort but mood and cognitive performance as well. Researchers compared participants completing tasks in upright versus slumped sitting positions, and the results proved striking.
In the study, participants were split into two groups: one completing a series of stressful tasks while deliberately sitting upright, the other completing the same tasks in a relaxed, slumped posture. Researchers measured mood, self-esteem and stress levels before and after each task.
The results showed that participants who sat upright reported higher post-task mood and lower fatigue. Those who sat slumped reported more negative emotional responses and lower self-confidence scores.
Cognitive tests revealed a difference too. Upright-sitting participants gave faster, more consistent responses on tasks measuring decision-making speed; researchers suggest this may relate to how posture allocates attentional resources.
Researchers point to one likely mechanism behind the effect: the relationship between posture and the stress hormone cortisol. Prior studies have shown slumped posture can raise cortisol levels, while upright posture may favorably influence the balance between testosterone and cortisol.
Another possible explanation involves posture's effect on breathing. Sitting upright allows the diaphragm to move more freely, potentially increasing oxygen intake — which in turn can affect both energy levels and cognitive clarity.
Researchers say the findings could carry meaningful implications for workplaces and schools. They emphasize that people who spend long hours at a desk may benefit not only physically but mentally from paying attention to posture.
The study's authors also note that posture's effect on mood may function as a feedback loop: poor mood can lead to slumped posture, and slumped posture can worsen mood further. They argue that deliberately adjusting posture could serve as a simple but effective tool to break that cycle.
Some experts urge caution about the size of the effect, noting the study was conducted in a short-term laboratory setting and that real-world effects may prove smaller. Still, the researchers stress that the results were consistent and statistically significant.
As a next step, the research team plans to test the long-term effects of posture interventions in workplace settings, aiming to measure the real-world impact of simple ergonomic changes on employee wellbeing.
